Reclaimed Territory

1996-1999

Reclaimed territory/portraits/grid is an installation of mixed media paintings exploring issues of power, voyeurism, interpretation and the female gaze as a conduit of the human spirit.

Appropriated historical images of women are layered under contemporary images connected to my own personal history. The appropriated images begin with Fayum painting, and spring through the pages of art history to 20th century American portraiture.

My research has involved literary translations from old French, as well as investigating, in depth, the appropriated portraits. The text and maps that are layered into the surface act as veils, revealing and transmitting information across time and place. Each layer is dependent on the next, a metaphor for life.
